Wind

Minnkota and its members have been at the forefront of wind energy development in North Dakota. The first two commercial-scale wind turbines in the state’s history were built through Minnkota’s Infinity Renewable Energy Program near the towns of Petersburg and Valley City (Infinity). The success of those first turbines jumpstarted efforts to harness the area’s abundant wind energy capabilities. Minnkota now partners with NextEra Energy Resources to purchase additional wind power from turbines near Langdon, Valley City and Center.

Presently, Minnkota purchases energy from North Dakota wind resources with a total nameplate generating capacity of 457 megawatts (MW).

Minnkota also administers the Infinity Renewable Energy Program on behalf of its member cooperatives and the municipals associated with the Northern Municipal Power Agency. This program allows consumers to choose how much of the energy they purchase is derived from renewable resources. Contact your member cooperative or municipal to learn more.

Renewable Energy Certificates
Each year Minnkota Power Cooperative chooses to sell a portion of the renewable electricity (in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs) generated from the renewable facilities in our portfolio. These sales are to entities outside of our member systems, who wish to purchase renewable energy but may not be able to readily purchase it through their electric utility. A REC represents 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable electricity generated – meaning for every 1,000 kWh of electricity produced from a renewable generator, one REC is created. Electricity stripped of RECs is no longer renewable as that value has been sold to another.
